Georges Seurat

This oil on canvas is a fine example of a great George Seurat paintings. The current owner acquired it from a wealthy Venezuelan family after Chavez came to power and seized their businesses. They had acquired it prior to WWII from the Gallerie Georges Petit. Its provenance prior to their acquisition is unknown and thus it is not eligible to be sold at Sotheby’s or Christies at this time. Presently it hangs in a place of prominence in one of the great homes of an American collector and is being sold to settle an estate. A lower price with part-ownership and full possession would be possible if the buyer will agree to have it forensically examined and sell it when Sotheby’s begins accepting forensics as evidence of authenticity in lieu of its current requirement of a perfect provenance going back to the painter.
