Museum-quality Metzinger

This is a significant oil on canvas by Jean Metzinger (1883-1956). Metzinger was a contemporary of Picasso. His works hang in many of the world’s greatest museums. There is a significant Gallerie Charpentier certificate verso that suggests it passed through that famous Paris gallery at some time. There is also a Mathias Fels authentication stamp on the canvas verso. Fels was one of the most important art authenticators of his time. It is not known who owned this splendid work of art prior to it coming into the family’s possession. There are also NAZI seals on both the canvas and the frame. They suggest that at some point in time it was seized by the Germans and then repatriated to the heirs of its owner. Partial ownership with full possession may be available if the buyer agrees to have it forensically analyzed by a forensic laboratory acceptable to Sotheby’s and sell it when Sotheby’s begins accepting forensic evidence as proof of authenticity in lieu of its current requirement of a perfect provenance.
